Pebble Creek Men's Club Newsletter
July 2010
July 16th - Hello fellow men's club members - time for your monthly dip into journalistic splendor and humor (yea, right!).  Guess you will just have to put up with my ramblings instead.  We've had a busy few weeks since the last newsletter so I will get right to it.

First of all, a bit of sad news.  Longtime member Al Siemers recently lost his wife due to complications from a head injury.  We all express our condolences to Al and his family during this difficult time.

Men's Club News:
the first half of our Wednesday league season is now complete and we are well underway with the second half.  9-Hole and 18-Hole leagues pay out for 1st half winners so you should see something on the bulletin board showing those winners.  All leagues pay cash money, so check in the Pro Shop for your money or contact the appropriate league chairman  (Tony Graning for 9-hole, and Jim Anderson for 18-hole).  Senior league pays out just for end of year.  The year long Match play tournaments are moving along well, remember to keep trying to get your matches in before the deadlines.
We had our Guest Day on June 23rd and by all the feedback we got from members and guests, it was a resounding success.  A big thanks to all our sponsors who made the event a success and a big thanks to Gary Obele and Warren Johnson for organizing and running the event again this year.  Also, kudos to Course Superintendent Dave Simeon and his crew for having the course in exceptional condition and also to Tim and Tami Cox (and staff) for the excellent steak dinner.  The board appreciates all your hard work!  Full results from Guest Day can be found on our web site at www.pcmensclub.com.  We had a little lower turnout than in past years and frankly, the board is at a loss to understand or explain why that is.  We would appreciate hearing from you, the members, on how or what we need to do to make this a more popular event.  With the course we have here, we just don't understand how other clubs have 144 or more players and we only can get 60 or so.  So, get in touch with one of the board members if you have some ideas or feedback.  Unless the numbers start improving, we may no longer have a Guest Day in the future.
It is still a few months away, but time to remind everyone about the Club Championship which will be played on Saturday September 11th and Sunday September 12th.  Make sure you block out those dates on your calendar.  This is the one big tournament you do not want to miss!
Also, don't forget that we now only have 4 more weekend events left in the season for you to come out and have some fun.  They will all be Saturday morning events and with the early starts, you can get in your round and still be home to spend time with your family and friends for the rest of the weekend.  We are usually done well before noon, so while your wife and kiddies are sleeping in, drag your butt out of bed and come out and get in some golf camaraderie with your buddies.  You might even have a little time to get a quick nip or two in at T's bar and grill before you have to head home.

Past Event Results:

Men's Club Guest Day - Wednesday, June 23rd.  In this 2-man best ball format, the team of Gary Obele and his guest Don Saucke took the first place GROSS score honors with an excellent score of 59.  On the net side, Mark Staller (who? he never wins) and his guest Vern Johnson took first place with a net score of 62.  Full results on the web site.  Thanks to all members who brought guests and played in the event.

Member-Member Event - Saturday, July 10th.  We had 16 teams play in this 2-man best ball event, which was a very good turnout.  Taking first place with an excellent score of net 60 was the team of Aaron Bauer and Tim Cox.  Aaron shot a great gross score of 73 on his own ball and with his partner "the big ham", they won by two shots over the second place teams.  Coming in second place (won on scorecard playoff) with a net score of 62 was the team of Tony Graning and Eric Graning.  No, they are not brothers (thank God) but they are related (which is bad enough).  Just kidding!  Nice playing 'fellas.  Coming in 3rd, also with a net 62 was the team of President Mel Doherty and Jerry Vetsch.  My understanding of this team pairing was that when Jerry could get his partner to shut up, they actually shot pretty well.  Apparently, though this is not confirmed, Jerry "accidentally" hit Mel in the mouth with a practice swing, which left him slightly dizzy and speechless the rest of the morning.  No wonder he shot so well!  And finally, bringing up the last payout spot in 4th position with a score of net 64 was the team of Mike McCann and Ted (aka Teddy Bear) Crowe.  Sorry guys, no cheap shots for you, I ran out of material.  Seriously though, there was some excellent individual scores shot led by Scott Holt with 1 under score of 71 gross.  Also shooting low gross scores of 73 were the previously mentioned Aaron Bauer (net 65) and Eric Gohdes.  On the net side, Ted Crowe (net 69), Eric Graning (net 67) and Tim Cox (net 67) all had fine rounds.  Hmmmm...wonder if that is why they all placed in the money?  See Brannan (he was my partner) - if you would have played better we might have won!  Your killing me!!  :))

Upcoming Events:

British Open Event - Sunday, July 18th. This is a Pro Shop event and open to the public.  You will draw the name of a professional playing in the British Open and play best ball.  Make your own tee times.

2-Man 6-6-6 Combination - Saturday, July 31st. This will be a morning event with tee times starting around 7:00 AM.  We, as a board, have been looking for years to find some kind of fair way to handicap this event.  With 6 holes of Scramble, 6 holes of Alternate Shot, and 6 holes of best ball; it has been hard to find a way to help balance the teams.  But we finally think we found a way to do that.  Rather than go into a long winded explanation of how this will work, if you really care you can ask me, and I will explain it to you.  Needless to say, we believe this will help make it fairer for everyone.  Sign up deadline is Wednesday, July 28th so find your partner and get signed up now.  The sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board already.

One-Two Best Ball - Saturday, August 14th. This will be a morning event.  Pick your own partner with 100% handicaps.  You will count one net best ball score on the odd numbered holes, and your two net scores on even numbered holes.  Sign up deadline will be on Wednesday, August 11th.

That is about it for now.  Sorry for all the cheap shots guys, I was just trying to liven things up a bit. :))  The weather lately has been pretty hot and muggy, but gosh all mighty, the course is in fantastic shape!!  So throw a wet towel over your head (helps keep the mosquitos away) and come out and play some golf.

See you at the course,
Mark Staller
