| (July 15) Hello fellow Men's Club Members!
How are you all doing? Summer has finally arrived and the next thing you know it will be over and we will be freezing our butts off (most of us anyway), so get out and enjoy the golf course while you can. And now, onto the news.... First, the Spring Kickoff event that was originally scheduled for the end of April (and was snowed out) has been rescheduled again. The new date and name of the event is Individual Low Gross/Low Net (same format as Spring Kickoff) and the date will be this Saturday morning, July 19th! Sign up on Wednesday. Second, we still need more players to sign up for the 24 man team competition this Sunday, July 20th against Prestwick golf club. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board and we really need some more lower handicaps players to sign up, but barring that, we will take anyone. If you enjoy competition and 2 man best ball match play events, this is a great competition to play in, so sign up! Third, the Club Championship is only a month away! That's right...this year the Club Championship has been moved back to its original date - August 9th and 10th. Check out the men's club handbook for details on the format and the flights. There are two changes in the format compared to previous years. One is that ONLY the Championship flight will play 27 holes on Sunday. This will give more people time to be done playing and jump back in their carts and head out to follow the final groups in the championship flight and cheer them on to the finish. Ah yes, what a site it is to see 20 golf carts lining a little hill behind the green full of drunk, loud and boisterous golfers cheering your every shot and moaning your 2 foot par putts when you miss them. The other change is that in the net flights, there will only be net payouts and no gross payout. This is being done so as not to dilute the payouts so much. Same for the Championship flight except that will be gross scores and there will be no net payout. Sign up sheets should be on the bulletin board shortly, if they are not already. Anyone, regardless of handicap, can sign up to play in the Championship flight. Just remember though, the Championship flight is gross score only and is played from the Championship tees! All remaining flights will be split according to handicaps and number of players signed up. We usually try to to make each flight around 10-12 players and within a couple of strokes of each other to make it more competitive within that flight. There is also Senior flights and a Super Senior (white tee) flight. Again, see all the details in your handbook. Past Event Results: Chicago Points - June 25th. Congratulations to Curt Renslow who took the honors in this modified stableford scoring event with a fine score of 46 points. Chip Edstrom, Lonnie Fluck, and Tom Wigren were right on his heels with scores of 44 points each. Curt is having a great summer so far in the events with several wins, nice job Curt! 2-Man 6-6-6 Combination - July 12th. Congrat also to Warren D. Johnson and Tom Wigren for winning this fun event just this past Saturday. Despite the gale force winds, Warren and Tom shot a fine round of 66 to take the title (no easy feat with alternate shot in there). Curt Renslow and Lyle Herbst were second with a score of 68. Good playing, everyone! Upcoming Events: Individual Low Gross/Low Net - Saturday (AM), July 19th. As mentioned, this is the Spring Kickoff rescheduled. Full handicaps will be used and flights will be based on the number of players entered. 2-Man Best Ball (pick your own partner) - Wednesday, August 6th. Yep, another Wednesday event for those who cannot play on the weekends (and for all the rest of you, too!) Pick your own partner, 80% handicaps will be used. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - Saturday/Sunday, August 9th-10th. This is what we play all year for - your chance at glory! Individual stroke play over two days with a cumulative score (net for the flights and gross for the Championship flight) determining the winner! Let's hope for good weather, not too hot or muggy and no rain. Still to be determined is if we are going to have a "Pre-Tournament Party" the Friday night before as we have had in past years where we "auction" off players. If someone volunteers there garage, I will let you all know. I guess that is all I can think of for now. Of course, the second I hit the "send" button I will think of more things I wanted to mention. Oh well, I am getting old and my memory (not to mention my waist line) is not what it used to be. OOOH, OOOH, OOH (think Horshack in Mr. Kotter) - I just remembered something. Here are the latest standings in the Player of Year race. It should be no surprise to anyone to see this guy at the top of the standings based on his finishes in the events so far, but remember - the big points are still out there! Club Championship, the year long individual and Classic match play tournaments, and the Tournament of Champions all count as double points! So anyone has still got a chance to win Player of the Year. Here are the latest standings: Name Points Renslow, Curt 18 Anderson, Jim 10 Raetz, Paul 10 Herbst, Lyle 9 Johnson, Warren D. 9 Doherty, Mel 8 Wigren, Tom 8 Holly, Don 7.5 Brannan, Dan 7 Fluck, Lonnie 5.5 Hanson, Byron 5 Simeon, David 5 Obele, Gary 4.5 Taylor, Mike 4.5 Cox, Tim 4 Dingmann, Brian 4 Dunderi, Kevin 4 Martin, Noel 4 ok, now that is it. I better get to work. Don't forget everyone is welcome at the Board Meetings. Our next meeting is Monday, August 4th at 6:30 PM at Peake's restaurant. See you at the course, Mark Staller Club Secretary |
