| Pebble Creek Men's Club Newsletter August 2010 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
| (August 16th) Hi guys - time again for your monthly newsletter. It sure has been a hot few weeks since I last wrote, every time I walked outside I felt like that witch in Wizard of Oz ("I'm melting...I'm melting.....). Finally, we have a few days of nice comfortable weather, but not for long as it looks like this weekend the hot muggy weather will be back. So get out now and enjoy the "cool" weather while you can.
Men's Club News: I have a couple of items that I want to address here. First off, the end of the regular Wednesday league season is only 3 weeks away. The last night of regular league play will be on Wednesday, September 1st. That also is the first night of Fall League. For those of you who don't know (or forgot), Fall League is a 9-hole league. The format is 2-man best ball with 80% men's club handicaps. There will be 8 weeks of league (Sept 1st to Oct 20th) with no bye weeks. We will count your best 7 of 8 scores to determine the winners. The cost is only a measly $20 per player. If your partner has to miss a week, you can play solo at 100% handicap. I will have a sign up sheet up on the bulletin board tomorrow. Sign up there and then pay in the Pro Shop. Make sure you fill out another membership form and circle Fall League on the form so I can collect it and know who paid. Those members who have already prepaid for Fall League are: Jim Anderson, Lyle Herbst, Chris Lund, Scott Pauly, Curt Renslow, and Mark Staller. So find your partners now and get signed up! The second item is the current Player of the Year standings. I have had a couple people asking me about the current standings, so here they are. The Player of the Year is determined by their points earned from any official men's club event, league, or tournament. Points are given for finishing in the top 5 places in the event. There are 4 major events where points are doubled: Individual match play, Classic match play, Club Championship, and Tournament of Champions. The Player of the Year receives a large print which will be presented at the Fall Banquet on Wednesday, October 20th. Here are the current standings: (thru Aug 16th) Tony Graning 17 points John Dinsmore 13 points Todd Hanrahan 12 points Jim Anderson 11 points Curt Renslow 11 points Chuck Anderson 9 points Eric Gohdes 9 points Eric Graning 9 points Don Holly 9 points Scott Holt 9 points Warren Johnson 9 points Dave Landreville 9 points Jerry Vetsch 9 points As you can see, it is pretty bunched up. There are a lot of points still out there up for grabs, especially from the "majors", so everyone still has a chance to win, but you have to get out and play to do it!! The last item I want to remind everyone about again is that the Club Championship will be played on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. There are sign up sheets on the bulletin board now. You can choose to play in the Championship flight (regular men or senior men) which will be played at Gross scoring (no handicaps) or you can choose to play in the Net flights (full men's club handicap). Just sign up on the appropriate sheet. Flights will be assigned in the Net Division based on the number of people signed up. Sign up deadline is earlier for club championship than normal events as we have much more work to do to prepare for our biggest event of the year. Sign up deadline is on Labor Day, September 6th. Make sure you sign up by then. Oh...I forgot. I do have another item I would like to mention. As a 9 year veteran of military service, I would like to remind everyone that Labor Day Weekend (Sept 3-6) is Patriot Golf Day. Golf courses across the country come together to raise scholarship dollars for our military families. Pebble Creek is a registered course in this worthwhile endeavor. All you need to do is come out and play on any (or all) of those days and donate $1.00 (or more) to this cause. If you want to learn more about this event and its parent organization Folds of Honor, check out their website at www.patriotgolfday.com. This is an easy and cheap way to give something back to the men and women serving today and telling them that their sacrifices are not forgotten, that we appreciate all they are do for us. Past Event Results: 2-Man 6-6-6 combination - July 31st. We had a great turnout for this fun event with 18 teams. But it was the "Graning boys" - Tony and Eric that prevailed to win the title with an excellent score of 62. Coming in second just two strokes behind was the team of Dan Sabin and Mark Sycks and in third (due to tiebreaker) was the team of Denny Steele and Bill Struzyk, also with a score of 64. And in the final payout spot in 4th place was the team of Corey Stanger and Josh May with a score of 65. Nice job guys! One-Two Best Ball - August 14th. In this event played just this past weekend, the 2 man team of Dan Brannan and Joe Jansky won the tiebreaker to earn the first place spot with a score of 6 under par 104. Who said two old guys can't compete and win a men's club event? Coming in second also with a score of 104, was the team of Chuck Anderson and Eric Meester. And coming in one stroke behind the winners were the teams of Steve Engelby and Bill Timmer and the team of Gary Obele and Warren D Johnson. Great playing everyone! Upcoming events: 4 Club Tournament - Saturday, August 28th. This will be an morning start on the Red/Blue course. Individual stroke play using 100% handicaps. Each player can select up to 4 clubs to play in the 18 hole event. The putter counts as a club. This event is a great time and something out of the ordinary. It is also quite a challenge and requires the player to really think about his game and the course in order to "pick" the right clubs to bring along. Sign up deadline is Wednesday, August 25th. Club Championship - Saturday/Sunday, September 11th-12th. This is the one event of the year that you do not want to miss and what we play and practice all year for. Here is your chance to be able to brag and say that you are the "Club Champion". Even if you do not have the game or ability to play in the Championship divisions, you can still be a Club Champion in one of the net flights. But not if you don't come out and play!! We would really like to see a larger turnout for this event. We have 128 members this year and would like to see at least 100 come out to play. So, get in some practice and clear your schedule for that weekend. It is just one weekend out of the whole year. Buy your wife some flowers, take her to dinner, get down on your knees and beg...whatever it takes. If you like to golf and you like competition, this is a "must" tournament for you. I guarantee you will have a good time (but I can't guarantee you will play well, that is up to you). That is about all for now. We are coming down to the end of the year pretty quickly as league and tournaments are coming to a close. Pretty soon it will be snowing and -20 below and we will be wondering where the year went. Also, just a reminder that we will be looking for new board members for the coming year. The Fall Banquet is October 20th and we will be electing new board members for 2011. If you are interested in serving your men's club and working on the board, let any current board member know. We already have one volunteer, Ted Crowe has volunteered to run as Vice-President for 2011. Also, in the September newsletter I will be attaching a document explaining some by-law changes that the board is proposing. Those will need to be voted on by the membership at the Fall Banquet. See you at the course, Mark Staller Club Secretary |
