Pebble Creek Men's Club Newsletter
August 2009
(August 18th) Hello fellow Men's Club Members - the hot weather finally arrived (and hopefully it will be gone soon).  Hot weather is never fun for those of us carrying a little extra load around the middle.  I always feel like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz in that hot, humid weather...  "I'm melting....I'm m-e-l-t-i-n-gggggggggg"  Anyway, cooler weather is coming back again soon (whew!)  Boy, the summer sure has gone fast.  I hope you have all had plenty of time to work on your golf game because the Club Championship is just around the corner.

Men's Club News:
     - What a great segway...am I good at this or what?  Speaking of Club Championship, this is to remind you that you need to sign up by Sunday, September 6th if you want to play in the Club Championship on Saturday, Sept 12th and Sunday, Sept 13th!  We need a little extra time as there are a lot of details to get done before the tournament begins.  The championship weekend begins on Friday night, Sept 11th at Kendall Kragenbring's house (right next to Blue #4 tee box) for the annual Pre-tournament/Calcutta party.  The party begins around 7 pm and it is a bring your own event.  The auction for players will start around 9 pm.  Sign up sheets for the event are on the bulletin board now.  Anybody can play in the championship flight, regardless of handicap, but remember it is played from the championship tees and no handicaps are used.  I will be one of the Tournament Directors of this year's Club Championship and will be roaming around during the tournament monitoring pace of play.  With the biggest field of the year, pace of play is extremely important in order to get everyone through their round in a reasonable amount of time.  So, if you fall a hole and half behind the group in front of you, expect to see me coming your way with a warning to catch up.  It does not matter if you finish in 4 1/2 hours or not (that is just a guideline), the number one criteria is your position.  If you are two holes or more behind the group in front of you, you are out of position and may be penalized.  So, make every effort to keep up.  Anybody receiving a slow play penalty may appeal to the tournament committee immediately following play that day.  Do not wait until the tournament is over before appealing and certainly DO NOT sign and turn in your scorecard if you plan to appeal!!
     - OK, enough about that.  The end of the regular league season is just a few weeks off, which must mean that FALL LEAGUE will be starting soon, right?  Yes, you are correct!  Fall League starts on Wednesday, September 2nd and goes to Wednesday, October 21st.   Fall League is a 9-hole league.  The format is 2-man best ball using 80% handicaps.  There are 8 weeks in league and your best 7 team scores will20be counted to determine the winners.  I will have a sign up sheet on the bulletin board tomorrow.  Cost is only a measly $20 per person (pay in the Pro Shop and make sure you fill out another Men's Club membership form and circle Fall League).

Player of the Year: here are the current standings for Player of the Year (thru Aug 16th):
Dave Hollander               19.5 pts
Jim Hadac                      17 pts
Todd Hanrahan               13.5 pts
Dave Landreville              10 pts
Mel Doherty                    9 pts
Ted Crowe                      8 pts
Lyle Herbst                     8 pts
Ryan Isaacson                8 pts

There are still plenty of points available for a late run by someone.  So get out and play in the events!

One-Two Best Ball - August 15th.  This was a new event for the men's club this year and went extremely well.  We heard nothing but great feedback from the members who played saying how much fun the format was.  It certainly made things interesting on the holes where you needed to count both balls, especially if one (or both) of you had a really bad hole, as my partner and I found out losing 4 strokes in one hole.  Scoring was actually lower than I anticipated and it was a pretty tight race to determine the winner.  But, in the end, the team of Todd Hanrahan and Don Holly pulled out the win with a fine 7 under score of 101.  Coming in right on their heals with a 102 was Bob Gerlach and Dave Hollander, and just behind them tied for 3rd place with scores of 103 were the teams of Jim Anderson and Jim Hadac (the "Jim-bo's") and the team of Tom Cox and Josh May.  Great playing 'fellas!

Upcoming Events:

     -
4 Club Tournament - Saturday, August 29th (AM). This is another new event on the men's club schedule this year.  We were not sure how it would be received, but I have heard some rumors going around recently that there are quite a few guys talking about this event and working up their strategys on which clubs they20will use.  In fact, I even heard that there are a couple of guys who have been practicing with 4 clubs!   I know that this format is kind of quirky and ridiculous, but we have enough "serious" competitions during the year, and golf is supposed to be fun!  This event is all about fun.  Not to mention the challenge of playing 18 holes with only 4 clubs!  So, if you want to have a little fun and challenge yourself to see how good you really are, (trying to hit a 7 iron 50 yards cause you didn't bring a wedge), then this is the event for you.  Remember, you can only use 4 clubs, and a putter counts as a club!  Please, please...DO NOT bring more than 4 clubs in your bag.  Just bring the 4 clubs you plan on playing with, we don't want to see anyone get disqualified or penalized for having too many clubs or using a "wrong club" because they forgot.  Bring another bag or just take your extra clubs out of the bag that morning and leave them in the car.  That way you won't be tempted and make a mistake.  We will be checking you on the 1st tee and if you have more than 4 clubs in your bag, we will ask you to deposit the extras in your car.  Sign up deadline is Wednesday, August 26th.

That's about it for now.  Remember to keep getting your=2 0Classic and Individual matches done on time, (which everyone seems to be doing very well at).  The season is winding down and we have a busy couple of weeks ahead.  Wednesday League play only has a couple weeks left and then the Fall League will start.  School is about ready to start and the kid's sport seasons will be taking a lot of you away from the course, so take the time now to get in some golf while you can.

Our next Board Meeting will be on a different day this coming month.  We will be meeting on Thursday, September 10th at 6 pm at T's Restaurant to go over some final items before the Club Championship.  All members are welcome to attend the board meetings.

See you at the course,
Mark Staller
Club Secretary
